In the 1880s Rinsai drew more than forty horizontally-oriented pictures of flowers and birds. He published subsets of these pictures in the following three woodblock-printed picture books: Sōmoku Kachō Gafu (i.e., Picture Album of Plants, Flowers and Birds), Shinsen Sanjūroku Kachō (i.e., Newly Selected Thirty-six Flowers and Birds) and Shinmai Yoko-e no Kachō (i.e., New Sheets of Horizontal Pictures of Flowers and Birds). Twenty-five of these pictures are included in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Each picture shows an imaginary landscape with multiple species of flowers and birds. The names of the flowers are listed below each picture in the order that they appear in the picture, starting at the left side and proceeding to the right, followed by the names of birds, also moving from left to right. If necessary, switch to full screen by pressing the F11 key on the top row of your keyboard to see the picture plus caption.
